What is contactsd on Mac?
contactsd manages your contacts database and keeps it in sync with iCloud, Google, Exchange and other accounts. Many apps, not just Contacts, use it.
What it does
Mail, Messages, FaceTime, Calendar and third-party apps look up names and numbers through it. It also syncs changes with each account that has Contacts turned on, so it's most visible after you add an account or import contacts.
Why it gets busy
- Syncing a large address book, for example after adding an account.
- Contacts turned on for several accounts, which multiplies syncing.
- An app reading your whole contact list over and over.
- Merging or cleaning up duplicates.
Why is contactsd using so much CPU?
contactsd is syncing or serving contacts to apps. A large address book, several synced accounts or an app reading contacts repeatedly can keep it busy.
Is it safe to quit?
macOS restarts it right away. Apps reading contacts may pause.
How to calm it down
- Let syncing finish after adding an account.
- In System Settings › Internet Accounts, turn off Contacts for accounts where you don't need them.
- Check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Contacts and remove apps that don't need access.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch's History shows whether contactsd's activity started when you added an account, which tells you it's a one-time sync.
