What is bluetoothd on Mac?

bluetoothd is the macOS Bluetooth daemon. It handles pairing and connections for keyboards, mice, headphones, game controllers and other Bluetooth devices.

What it does

It discovers devices, manages pairings, and carries data and audio for connected devices. Continuity features like Handoff, Universal Control and AirDrop discovery also use Bluetooth Low Energy, so bluetoothd stays active even when nothing is paired.

Why it gets busy

  • Bluetooth audio, especially with a weak signal or interference.
  • Many connected devices, or one that keeps disconnecting and reconnecting.
  • Continuity features looking for your other Apple devices nearby.
  • Wireless interference from USB 3 hubs and drives, crowded 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or other radios.

Why is bluetoothd using so much CPU?

bluetoothd is busy with Bluetooth audio, unstable connections or Continuity scanning. Forget unused devices, reduce interference, and toggle Bluetooth if a connection is stuck.

Is it safe to quit?

macOS restarts it, but every Bluetooth device disconnects briefly, including a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

How to calm it down

  1. Remove devices you no longer use in System Settings › Bluetooth: click the info button next to a device, then Forget This Device.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and on from Control Center to reset stuck connections.
  3. Move USB 3 hubs and drives away from the Mac and your Bluetooth devices.
  4. Update third-party devices with the maker's app.
