What is wifianalyticsd on Mac?
wifianalyticsd is a Wi-Fi diagnostics process that ships with macOS. Apple doesn't document it in detail; as the name suggests, it gathers information about Wi-Fi performance.
What it does
It runs from /usr/libexec alongside airportd and the other Wi-Fi processes and is usually idle. It doesn't connect you to networks itself; airportd does that.
Why it gets busy
- Frequent Wi-Fi changes, like reconnecting or switching access points.
- Periods of poor Wi-Fi performance.
Why is wifianalyticsd using so much CPU?
wifianalyticsd gathers Wi-Fi performance information and gets busier when your Wi-Fi is unstable. A steadier connection or a restart usually settles it.
Is it safe to quit?
macOS starts it again, and quitting it has no effect on your connection.
How to calm it down
- Improve the Wi-Fi connection itself, since it's busiest when Wi-Fi is struggling.
- Restart your Mac if it stays busy without an obvious Wi-Fi problem.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch explains wifianalyticsd in plain words and shows whether its activity matches times your Wi-Fi was struggling.
