What is locationd on Mac?

locationd runs Location Services on your Mac. It works out where your Mac is, mainly from nearby Wi-Fi networks, and shares that with apps you've allowed.

What it does

Macs don't have GPS, so locationd estimates position from the Wi-Fi networks around you and other signals. Apps like Maps, Weather and Find My, and websites in Safari, need your permission, which you manage in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services.

Why it gets busy

  • Apps asking for your location often, like weather widgets or maps.
  • Moving between places, which triggers new estimates.
  • System features such as setting the time zone or Find My updating your location.

Why is locationd using so much CPU?

locationd is working out your Mac's location for apps and system features. Turn off Location Services for apps that don't need it.

Is it safe to quit?

macOS restarts it. Apps may lose your location for a moment.

How to calm it down

  1. Review apps in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services and turn off those that don't need your location.
  2. Click Details next to System Services in that list to turn off location-based features you don't use.

In SystemWatch

SystemWatch's History shows whether locationd is busy only while a particular app or widget is running, which points to the one asking.
