What is mobileassetd on Mac?

mobileassetd downloads and manages extra system content that isn't built into macOS, like fonts, dictionaries, voices, dictation and language models, and Apple Intelligence models.

What it does

Instead of shipping everything with macOS, Apple delivers many components as assets that download when needed or update in the background. mobileassetd fetches them, checks them, and removes old versions. It's often busy after a macOS update, or when you turn on a new feature or language.

Why it gets busy

  • A macOS update, after which assets are refreshed.
  • Turning on Apple Intelligence, which downloads on-device models.
  • Adding a language, keyboard, dictation language or voice.
  • A slow connection, which stretches downloads out.

Why is mobileassetd using so much CPU?

mobileassetd is downloading or unpacking system content such as language models, voices or Apple Intelligence models. It's busiest after updates and settles when the downloads finish.

Is it safe to quit?

macOS restarts it and resumes downloads later, so quitting only delays them.

How to calm it down

  1. Let it finish after an update or after turning on a feature. Keep the Mac on power and online.
  2. Remove voices and languages you don't use, in System Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content and System Settings › General › Language & Region.
  3. Make sure you have free disk space. Downloads can stall and retry when space is low.

The website edition of SystemWatch shows mobileassetd's network connections, and History shows whether a burst lines up with an update or a feature you just turned on.
