What is studentd on Mac?
studentd supports Apple's Classroom app, which lets teachers guide and view students' devices in schools that use it. It's installed on every Mac but does nothing unless the Mac is set up for a class.
What it does
Its launch settings tie it to Classroom: it starts when Classroom settings change and stays running only while the Mac is connected to a class. On a personal Mac it runs briefly at most.
Why it gets busy
- A school-managed Mac connected to a class.
- Classroom settings pushed by a school's device management.
Is it safe to quit?
macOS starts it again if Classroom needs it. On a personal Mac it rarely runs at all.
How to calm it down
- On a personal Mac there's nothing to do; it stays idle.
- On a school Mac, ask the school's IT team before changing anything.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch explains studentd in plain words, so you can see it's Apple's Classroom service and whether it's actually running.
