What is ScreenTimeAgent on Mac?
ScreenTimeAgent collects app and website usage for Screen Time and enforces the limits you've set, like Downtime and App Limits.
What it does
When Screen Time is on, it records which apps and websites you use and for how long, and applies limits and content restrictions. If Share across devices is on, usage from your other Apple devices is combined through iCloud.
Why it gets busy
- Syncing usage with your other devices when Share across devices is on.
- Enforcing many limits or content restrictions.
- Family Sharing setups where a parent manages a child's Screen Time.
Why is ScreenTimeAgent using so much CPU?
ScreenTimeAgent tracks usage and enforces limits. Syncing across devices adds work, and turning off Share across devices or App & Website Activity reduces it.
Is it safe to quit?
macOS restarts it, and your limits stay in place.
How to calm it down
- If you don't use Screen Time, turn off App & Website Activity in System Settings › Screen Time.
- Turn off Share across devices if you only need this Mac's data.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch explains ScreenTimeAgent in plain words, and History shows whether it's busy all the time or only while syncing.
