What is spotlightknowledged on Mac?
spotlightknowledged is part of Core Spotlight, the system that indexes content from inside apps. Apple hasn't published details of what it does, so treat it as part of Spotlight indexing.
What it does
It ships inside the CoreSpotlight framework in /System/Library/Frameworks and tends to be busy at the same times as corespotlightd, when apps have handed Spotlight a lot of new content. It does its work in the background and stops when it catches up.
Why it gets busy
- Large amounts of new app content, like mail, messages or notes, after a sync or a new setup.
- Reprocessing after a macOS update.
Why is spotlightknowledged using so much CPU?
spotlightknowledged works alongside corespotlightd when Spotlight has lots of new app content to process. It's usually temporary after updates or large syncs.
Is it safe to quit?
It restarts automatically, and the work it was doing simply starts over.
How to calm it down
- Give it time after an update or a big sync, with the Mac awake and on power.
- If it stays busy for days, install the latest macOS update, since Spotlight fixes often arrive in point releases.
- Restart your Mac if it seems stuck.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch knows spotlightknowledged's typical memory use and flags when it's far above it, and History shows whether a busy spell is ending.
