What is mdflagwriter on Mac?
mdflagwriter is a small helper that belongs to Spotlight. Apple doesn't document its exact job, but it ships with the other Spotlight components and starts only when Spotlight needs it.
What it does
It lives in the same Metadata framework folder as mds and mds_stores, and its launch settings identify it as part of Spotlight. It runs on demand and exits when done, so you'll usually see it only briefly.
Why it gets busy
- Spotlight activity in general, such as indexing after an update or after large file changes.
- It's rarely busy on its own. When it is, mds and mdworker_shared are usually busy too.
Is it safe to quit?
Spotlight starts it again when it needs it.
How to calm it down
- Treat it like the rest of Spotlight and let indexing finish.
- If Spotlight stays busy for days, exclude folders you don't search, or rebuild the index.
