What is WindowManager on Mac?
WindowManager runs Stage Manager, window tiling, and the click-the-wallpaper-to-show-desktop feature in recent macOS versions.
What it does
When Stage Manager is on, WindowManager groups your windows and shows recent apps along the side of the screen. It also handles dragging windows to screen edges to tile them, and moving windows aside when you click the wallpaper. With those features off, it's mostly idle.
Why it gets busy
- Stage Manager on with many apps and windows.
- Frequent tiling or window moves across several displays.
Why is WindowManager using so much CPU?
WindowManager is busy when Stage Manager or tiling is arranging lots of windows. Turning Stage Manager off, or closing windows, calms it.
Is it safe to quit?
macOS restarts it right away, and Stage Manager and tiling come back on their own.
How to calm it down
- Turn off Stage Manager in Control Center or in System Settings › Desktop & Dock if you don't use it.
- Close windows you aren't using so there's less to arrange.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch explains WindowManager in plain language, and History shows whether it got busy when you turned Stage Manager on.
