What is universalaccessd on Mac?

universalaccessd supports macOS accessibility features, such as Zoom, display adjustments and pointer options. It runs for every user, whether or not you use accessibility features.

What it does

It manages settings from System Settings › Accessibility and keeps them working across apps. A related helper named universalAccessAuthWarn is part of the same system and is tied to the alerts about apps that want Accessibility access.

Why it gets busy

  • Using Zoom, color filters or other display adjustments.
  • Changing accessibility settings, which it applies across the system.

Why is universalaccessd using so much CPU?

universalaccessd supports accessibility features. If it's busy, check which ones are on, and restart if it stays high.

Is it safe to quit?

macOS restarts it. Accessibility features may pause for a moment.

How to calm it down

  1. Turn off accessibility features you don't need in System Settings › Accessibility.
  2. Review System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and remove apps you no longer use.
  3. If it stays high with no accessibility features on, restart the Mac.
