What is ReportCrash on Mac?
ReportCrash writes a crash report when an app or process on your Mac crashes. It runs for a moment after each crash and then exits.
What it does
When a process crashes, ReportCrash records what it was doing and which code was involved, and saves a report in a Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports folder. You can read these in the Console app under Crash Reports. If you've chosen to share analytics, reports can also go to Apple and app developers.
Why it gets busy
- An app or background helper that crashes over and over, often right after it's relaunched.
- A large app crashing, which produces a bigger report.
Why is ReportCrash using so much CPU?
ReportCrash stays busy when something keeps crashing. Check Console's Crash Reports for the name that repeats, then update or remove that app.
Is it safe to quit?
It starts again at the next crash. Quitting it only loses that report; the crashing continues.
How to calm it down
- Open Console, select Crash Reports, and look for the same name repeating. That's what's crashing.
- Update that app, or remove it and its background items if you don't need it.
- If the crashing process belongs to Apple, install the latest macOS update.
In SystemWatch
SystemWatch's History shows how often ReportCrash wakes up, which tells you whether you're looking at one crash or a crash loop.
